What your personal smell reveals about your health

When a body emits a smell that others may find unpleasant, it is known as body odor, it is said that the main cause of the smell is sweat. However, that is not entirely correct, since practically sweat is odorless for humans. It is the rapid multiplication of bacteria in the presence of sweat and their breakdown in acids that ultimately causes that unpleasant smell. Most importantly, body odor should be considered a reason to worry because it says a lot about possible health problems such as diabetes, liver problems or an incorrect diet.

In this article, UnderRadars collected some data on body odor and its possible causes.

If your body has a faecal smell …

… may be caused by a bowel obstruction. This is a fairly dangerous medical condition that occurs when there is a blockage in the large intestine or small intestine. Such blockage in the intestinal tract usually causes a breath that smells like poop or poop and anything the person eats will only aggravate bad breath. On the other hand, problems with digestion can cause a bad smell of sweat. Underarm sweat is more affected, although different parts of the body can also produce sweat that smells like fecal matter.

If the smell is bitter …

… then you may have to visit a doctor because this reflects problems with your liver . A slow liver produces a variety of chemicals that have peculiar odors, and this fact will definitely affect and produce a bad smell from your body. A damaged liver is also characterized by symptoms such as digestive problems and nausea.

If the smell is fishy …

… you may have a disorder called fish smell syndrome or also known as Trimethylaminuria. This is manifested in an offensive body odor and a rotten fish smell in the  urine, sweat and breath of people who have this disorder due to  excessive excretion of trimethylaminuria (TMA). Unfortunately, it is a genetic disease and the symptoms are felt from birth. Other causes of a fishy smell may occur as a result of excess protein in the diet or  the presence of specific bacteria. That is why the treatment of this syndrome, apart from antibiotics and specific acid lotions, includes certain dietary requirements.

If the smell is sweet …

… this could be a sign of diabetes . Your body may have a sweet or fruity smell due to high levels of ketones in the bloodstream. If your urine has this specific smell, it can also be a symptom of the disease or maple syrup urine syndrome, which is a metabolic disorder that causes an inability of the body to break down the amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine.

If you have a rotten egg smell …

… you may be consuming too much meat. Meat is a product that weighs on the digestive system, so people who eat a lot of meat every day may have a repulsive sulfuric smell like rotten eggs. This specific smell is caused by the high content of sulfur-containing amino acids in meat, especially red meat. There is no harm in these amino acids, but they need to be digested well, which is not so common.

If the smell is like alcohol …

… when you’ve celebrated or attended parties and  had too many alcoholic drinks. When we consume alcohol, the body recognizes it as a toxin and tries to break it down into acetic acid. This can metabolize approximately 90% alcohol in this way, and is also excreted differently. Part of it comes out in the form of urine, but it is also excreted by sweat and through the respiratory system. This is what creates that specific body odor after a big party.

If you smell sweaty and sweat too much …

… if this happens to you, you should have a hyperhidrosis test  , which is basically excessive sweating. Although neurological diseases, infectious endocirins and other systemic diseases can sometimes also cause hyperhidrosis. In  most cases they occur in people who are otherwise healthy. Heat and emotions can be triggers of hyperhidrosis, but many people who suffer from this disorder occur primarily in the hours when you wake up the first hours in the morning, even at normal temperatures and without stress. The main sweat zones of the human body are the armpits, the groin area and the feet .

Do you know any other conditions that can cause body odor? We would like to hear your answers in the comments.
